ON FRIDAY! WE'VE GOT....

Rock’It ‘08!!!

...the first rock festival of its kind organised by the NTU Live Music Society on the 19^th of February on NTU’s own campus grounds, was seemingly a surprise success. 0ver 20 bands auditioned for the 9 slots, showcasing talents like King Kong Jane, Blackstar, Stentorian, Brown Shoe Electric and s.p.o.n.g.e. HomeClub, together with partners Asahi were brought in to provide the drinks needed to get the crowd going, and it is this same partnership that’s going to bring the Rock’It ’08 Encore Party to you guys. After witnessing the bands on display during Rock’It ’08, HomeClub was kind enough to invite the organisers to stage an encore party in its own premises, with the bands King Kong Jane, Brown Shoe Electric and s.p.o.n.g.e set to rock the crowd one more time. So come on down to HomeClub on the 21 of March, and treat yourselves to a sonic feast!

Hello Homies! It's your favorite (I hope) homeclub blogger Bang again!

Here is Rock Unity! The first heavy metal gig at Homeclub, which occurred on the 24th of November. These awesome metal bands came, they rocked and they conquered. For a few days after I experienced what was commonly known as bee-in-ear syndrome, but it worth it.

Hiya Homies!

As you can see our webbie is currently under construction and revamping, so please visit this blog for pictures, updates and more good stuff that happens all the time at Homeclub.

On thursday the 29th we've got Rediscovering The Rolling Stones! with Rockstar Collective. Coming back a third time for the Rediscovery series is Kevin Matthews but this time as Kevin Matthews and The Groovy People! Honestly I can't wait to hear how Kevin sounds with a full band, and hopefully hear some renditions of my favorite Stone's songs. I'm not going to suggest -BEAST OF BURDEN- though I'll just - IT'S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL - keep my fingers crossed. After that we've got Mr. Black from Sweet Music FM and Benjy of the Sputniks on the decks!

There are many preconceptions on Singapore and club life. Some of them are true. Indeed they are. I tell no lies. This is a state that is well run, highly efficient, safe and secure. Club life, a platform for hedonism and debauchery may therefore seem bland and uninspiring. That is, if one simply skims the surface. What one ‘in the scene’ will quickly find out is that in actual fact it only takes a paddle into the creative pool of Singapore to find that it’s diversity spreads like wild fire. From racial integration to the unparalleled variety of food, this environment of both shades and flavour leave a very special sense to grow. Sound. And with the pace at which this country moves it’s impossible not to imagine a partner to that element. Dance. Club life therefore, although undeniably in its infancy, when compared to Europe, is both absorbent and abundant on the island. But, what the discerning clubber who knows what is, what should and indeed what could be, will tell you, is that the majority of the clubs have succumbed to mass markets. Diversity is there while substance however, is not. Or so it might seem. Let us go back to Singapore’s image of sterility, or better put, succinct efficiency, which I will add is the only way for necessary parts of a society to work, such as hospitals, immigration buildings and civil service. The nature of creativity and enjoyment however, (two components I think absolutely necessary to any society as well as any clubbing experience) is about exploring. It’s about taking tangents and not looking back, making mistakes and learning as you walk the path. After traveling around the world and having lived here for seven years with a break in the middle, I can confidently say there is only one place, which really embraces this alternative vision on experience and achievement. This is HOME. You will find no exuberant facade for unknown needs, no unwanted cost for anything more than the purist elements of true nightlife.

Joe and Ginette play in Malaysia!

Both Joe and Ginette went up to Malaysia individually to play at different events recently. Ginette played with Twilight Action Girl at Loft, Zouk KL on Friday 13th July while Joe spinned at Juice Mag 5th bday bash at Passion on the 30th of June.

I sat down with them to ask them a few questions of their experiences.

1. What is unique about the Malaysian audience?

Ginette: The thing that's unique about our neighbours is that they'll dance to anything! Even to music they don’t know, so that's great!

Joe: It went like a flash and the few hours snapped to an end. Just like that. It was such a kick. I beleive if you drop in a good tune, audience from anywhere will react in similar berserk fashion.

2. How would you compare the indie scene to Singapore?

Ginette: From many times I've played at gigs with my band and that recent time when I went to spin with TAG, I would say that the Malaysian scene kids are very open and receptive to new forms of music and very very hospitable. Everytime I'm there, it's fabulous!

Joe: Malaysia has a super vibrant scene. The fact that the peninsula with a population close to 30 million and a huge landmass, is a hinterland of creative opportunities. Although Kuala Lumpur is still very much where it's at, all the major cities have their own scene. It creates a rich diversity, like a scene within a scene.

3. Did you have to adapt your play list to a different audience or were they as susceptible to the tunes you usually spin at Beat!?

Ginette: I didn't have to adapt at all. They knew everything and are crazy party folks!

Joe: Slightly. What I know from playing at Beat was that you never go in with a set playlist. You have to feel the crowd. That's what I did that night.

4. What did you think of the other acts that played that night?

Ginette: TAG are great, especially to have done this for so many years now. I've always thought them great and helped bring them down to our island to spin with Poptart back in '05.

Joe: Zack was the other guest dj/selecter that night. He's from KL and is in a band called the Desserters. He's a good friend. We got smashed but fortunately his wife who was sober drove us home.

5. Who is one Malaysian act you admire and would like to play with?

Ginette: I'm not very familiar with their DJs, but I am familiar with a few of their bands and are friends with them. I've been playing shows there with my various bands since '93. I like playing with KLPHQ, the guys are great!

Joe: The guys from Twilight Action Girl! We gotten them over a few weeks ago. Ginette went up to gig there last month.

6. Do you have many Malaysian trips planned in the future? What about other international destinations?

Ginette: I'll be playing the rock tent with TAG (Twilight Action Girl) in October in the Malaysian leg of the Global Gathering! So I'm really excited about that! My own slot! I hope to do Loft, Zouk KL again soon of course!

Joe: Yessss. 7th Sept at TAG. When TAG's main man Daryl smsed me that my date was confirmed, I immediately booked my bus tickets up.

I so super wanna go party at Bangkok's own indienight called Dudesweet.

Where is the Soul?

At long last a Sm:)e is launched within the heart of Singapore's underground. The silhouette of Singapore's true night grooves play loud into the late part of the night and early morning. Finally soul is brought back to dance floors.

Some may count success in numbers and return in profit. Yes, that is important but for some and it seems to be an increasing few, success was measured in the wideness of the collective smile that was shared on such a forward thinking yet undeniably nostalgic event.

Music, Colours and most importantly emotions flowed through the night as organizers strove to create something with more spine that skin. A stellar line up that night lets get on the way with what physically took place that night. The event and the acts that made it what it was.

The Karl Maka opened. (*Refer to the photos at an earlier post for more imagery than there is in this article). Their unique brand of synth pop always gets an early crowd rocking and tonight was no exception. Songs laden with saccharin synths and sing along vocals meant involvement and enthusiasm by the audience during the entire performance. If this wasn't enough there is always the signature move of Jon Maka bursting into the crowd freeing the mic up over that ever so familiar Depeche Mode song that everyone should know the name of. Anyone? Quite simply sweet and easy to take in, their performance could be compared to a sugar coated pill with much sweeter after effects.

The night had started and as punters tucked into the end of their hour long free flow, Smile resident DJR handed over the transition between synth pop rising up and comers to established international Podo, previously of Technorient HK and now running Love Da Records. A Smile resident of the highest caliber and experience (like all of the three behind this revival) he stepped up with a bag full of tracks spanning from early days of Technasia to secrets of the far reaching sounds of melodic techno and beyond. Not one to back away from a harder sound, he interlaced between seamless mixing into jackhammering tracks that left the few left on the floor in awe of such transitions. It's a shame that most needed a smoke break and so a collection of the floor went outside to enjoy cigarettes and a football game that was currently showing. Nevertheless, Podo continued on strong with a mammoth set, never backing down and pushing his sound forward.

An hour in, a good friend and Smile partner, loopinmotion came to join. A true veteran of the scene it has been none other than his hard work and continual perseverance that has meant an event like this could have taken place. Through both ups and downs he has stayed strong and continues to do so. There is nothing that is telling me his commitment will ever change. Between the seamlessness of Podo's mixing and the breakdowns of loop's now signature echos and delays they brought together a harmony in composition. A new energy came and with it new faces and feet. The two of them were obviously having fun as both smiles and records were exchanged with friendly yet powerful execution. Perhaps everyone had all finished their long awaited cigarettes, I'm not sure but, for whatever the reason, a crowd started to fill as energy and passion flowed through both of these individuals movements and track selection.

Next came and was what many had been waiting for. Deetron, who recently has had an incredible release on Music Man started off with a favourite track of mine 'I'm like a Child', a Carl Craig remix of a Junior boys track. It seems to me and rightly so that everything that Carl touches becomes gold wax, this is one of the latest ones. Deetron himself has currently been on such a mission, with his recent album and the increasingly successful singles that are being released afterwards it seems there is no stopping this spacious and evocative sound. Having said that by space i do not mean minimal so do not be confused, this is full bodied music with plenty of soul. Anyway, I'll stop my pigeon holing, its all House really.

Apologies for the tangent, I will, as was previously intended, go back to Deetron. Technically efficient but not without flare, he moved both quickly and smoothly without compromise. Chopping, layering and doubling up, he is, and I can now say this first hand, a DJs DJ. Impeccable selection with a sensitivity to the crowds needs he also possesses speed and precision while mixing three decks.

No, I can't say it was a full house that night even when Deetron came to take control. Can I ask a question now. In the words of Abe Duque's release, "What Happened?" What happened to the music, what happened to the soul?" I can safely say that is truly one of the goals of this event, to bring back both passion and soul to the dance floor. This is only the beginning. Smile for the future.

The Karl Maka @ Sm:)e

Opening up for Deetron last Saturday was The Karl Maka.

A band different than any other heard on this island. Brandishing their own form of synth-pop ballads they sound somewhere as a cross between Depeche Mode, The Postal Service and The Human League. Interesting indeed as they pulled off originals and covers laden with video games samples and never to be heard quite like this before.

A SM:)E Preview...

The Sound of Sm☺e made a preview at last Saturday’s Sublime. Following the now recent trend of forward thinking events both in Berlin and Cologne, HOME Parties sought to combine a synergy between indie electronic bands and DJs, as the Karl Maka opened for a stellar line up of local talents.

What was also notable of the event was that this was 7/7/07. In 7 other there was a concert that was broadcasted in 7 other countries. We broadcasted it too. Here is a link to some people’s opinion of the festival in Sydney: http://blogs.smh.com.au/newsblog/archives/your_say/014405.html?page=2#comments By signing up as friends of Live Earth, we took on the role of promoting awareness through broadcasting the event on our screens. While not creating a direct solution to the problem, we included the addition of planting our own flowers to be kept at the club. Guests now have Sunflowers and marigolds that are to grow outside the club. Come and see how they grow on your return to the club.

The event, as mentioned, was opened By The Karl Maka, an indie-electronic band with one guitar, midi controllers, a keyboard, ableton and two members played their second set at Home. Their sound is nothing less than unique fusing 80s synth-pop with a more modern twist as well as reinterpreting pop classics like Michael Jackson and Depeche Mode. Interacting closely with the crowd, lead singer Jonathon went into the crowd in the final songs passing his mic around to those who knew the words. A great way to kick off the show, this was only the beginning of a long line of electronic funky beats to satisfy those with eager feets.

Our own DJR took over easing into more 80s classics and synth-driven songs as the night started to make a smooth transition into more dance orientated music. 20 mins of stone floor classics by the likes of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and The Human League made for a perfect bridge between live instruments and the DJs selection which was to come.

Rafi Dead aka for[e]sight stepped up next pushing a minimal sound that Europe would be proud of. Slowly building up the tempo to a minimal bump in the night bleeping beat, for[e]sight moved soundscapes into a more mathematical and methodical arena. Carefully programming beats to their reduced maximum, he kept the beat grooving to a 4/4 bass that was nothing less than hynotic, and concert had turned distinctly into dancefloor.

Heavy-weights of the night and future Sm☺e residents, loopinmotion and podo, went back to back for two hours going from minimal to the more melodic sounds of Detroit and beyond. Intricate mixing and effective use of the effects unit made this an interesting collaboration of sounds. From tracks simply consisting of the bare minimum of a drum machine to synth-arppegiated arrangements a variety of sounds were covered from both DJs. The more methodical approach of podo’s eq work fitting perfectly with loop’s driving beats and synchronized drops; this was a combination of assured dancefloor destruction.

Moving at high pace as he usually does, xzez came on dishing out classic Detroit beats with a heavy 808 influence. Increasing the pitch at an almost unnatural and neck-breaking pace, strings came seamlessly in above a barrage of four kicks and second beat snares and assorted hi hat rhythms.

Next up came the seamless sewing of tracks with a back2back set by old schoolers, DJ Kai and DJ Justin. Going towards a more techy sound than they usually are known for, they contributed perfect late night grooves for all those left to enjoy. These two are incredibly versatile whatever style of 4/4 dance music they need to produce they always seem to deliver, Saturday night was no exception.

Finishing off this 7 act rotation came Home residents lock’n’groove and DJR, playing a couple of tracks each they built off each other’s styles providing a sound that only two minds working at one could put together. Starting off with deep Detroit tech, they pushed this sound system to it’s max while keeping the remaining few still left moving on the dance floor. Funky as hell with horns screaming left right and centre, not to mention tom toms shuffling, they also provided twisted synths and punchy electro beats.

But the night did not end there, as the record slowly stopped on the platter, beats at 170bpm quickly took over with a drum and bass set by the newest Home resident DJ Ming. Bodies frolicked from in between cracks or perhaps even outside of the club as a new lease of life came to play; we were approaching 6am.

This was a Sm☺le preview, get ready for a new wave movement of music that is meant for dancing to and feeling good, we’re going back to our roots we’re going back to the old school where genre was unimportant. What matter’s is how you feel and indeed it’s our intention to have everyone smiling. So stay tuned for smilingly good dance floor fun.

Afterwards, the very cream of the crop of indie DJs come to take helm of the controls with Doopz and Slantboy (Amanda and Desmond from Electrico) bringing in a more dance orientated event as we come closer to midnight. Sham from the infamous band Plain Sunset will also be playing as well as z:itch, an established player in the indie electro scene, also know as Zaidi and behind the now current Hang the DJ. This is no joke this is an indie party made especially for the headz. To the end of the night Sublime take control and even later on we show a special preview of future collaborators of Hang the DJ: Deck Slutz. Saturday saw a collection of some of Singapore's oldest and most underrated house and techno DJs provide sessions which were nothing less than Sublime. Reaching the outskirts of this often overlooked yet fundamental genre of electronic dance music, each DJ, or team of, wove a seamless set to the pleasure of tapping toes, pumping elbows, bouncing knees and gyrating hips. A dance floor full enough to feel it yet not too claustrophobic to really move was at the helm of those who lapped it up.

I salute all of those who had a truly good time without second guessing what they were doing or where they were. These are the good times which still are and always will be, make a choice, be part of an event that holds more to heart than the wallet, we (and that is the collective universal 'we' including both you and me) do it because we love it, not because everyone else is.

The night started off with one of the pioneers of Singapore's female DJ scene, Cherry from Pop My Cherry. With a collection of tunes and an ear that will make any respectful DJ drool, this lady has big ears for tunes that escape most on their first listen. A deep, dubby set with the occasional throw-in of funky latin beats created an appropriate backdrop for later painting on this canvas of 4/4 beats.

Moving on progressively, Kai and DJ Justin gave a lesson in absolutely seamless perfection as they mixed meticulously both beat and melody into a journey of an hour and half. Unforgivingly good in terms of phrasing and programming, these guys never fail to challenge you into deciding exactly when one track starts and the other finishes. No egos or fast fingers, this is how mixing was meant to be for a big dance floor or festival. These guys are possibly Singapore's best kept secret when it comes to progressive sounds minimal, house and techno.

Next up was Rafi. He is part of Singapore's leading forums 'Frontallabs' and no stranger to the scene of both Singapore and Melbourne. Heading for a more minimal approach than any of the previous DJs, he showed a filling floor why he has evolved more into a sound technician than DJ. Layering sample upon sample in constructed his set, he pieced together elements from respective tracks rather than going from the orthodox one track to the next, laying the final bricks of what was now the walls of a stronger than adequate 'house that jack built'. The roof was next to come...

Xzez swiftly slotted in after Rafi and methodically sped up the pace to a responsive floor that might well have been full of just knees, feet, elbows and fists. Surprising all with much more than his driving, percussive detroit tech, a good dose of left field electro also came out of his ever-growing-deeper bag of tricks. It has been a long time since I've seen this guy behind the wheels, and it is a shame really as he is both modest and intense, restrained yet incredibly quick. We hope more from this always impressive DJ soon.

Next up came Sublime DJs, loopinmotion, lock'n'groove and DJR. Keeping with the tempo and feeding off each others fire they brought a wide range of house and techno for the now full but-not-excessively-so dance floor. Taking over from xzez and tightly pushing it with tension that made anyone who wasn't on the floor think twice, loop played a set that was nothing less than driving. Comparable perhaps to something like a locomotive, he eased into his tracks, after which, taking full of their pitch and the effects unit, layering, cutting and dropping beats with a lucidity that only comes with experience. Lock'n'groove came up afterwards adding some flavour to the mix, from Dave Clarke, Laurent Garnier, Luke Slater and Current fave Redshape, he played from the back part of his collection, sending memories into the minds and moving shoes of those on the floor. DJR came in towards the end solidly pummeling out techno to electro which had the effect of keeping everyone, no matter how tired they were, moving incessantly. A master puppeteer, he kept each and everyone tied to a string, moving, feeling and loving every moment as we arrived into the later hours of the early morning.

A variety of classic tracks both old and new, Sublime DJs looked both at the past and present of Detroit, into the recent releases of Berlin but more so with a mix that would fuel a future global nation of dance. Singapore might be a small island but something special happened last Saturday. All quite idealistic I know but nonetheless, there was feeling in that floor, sense in that sound. Ask anyone who was there, people were above all getting down without preconceptions of who they were supposed to be or how exactly they were supposed to be dancing. Even those who were not dancing eagerly brought their chairs forward, closer, to those great speakers that hang in the sky.

A night without pretense and full of truth, a simple night in it's essence, through and through, simply Sublime.

Vinyl vs. Technology / Mixing vs. Effects

As the art of the DJ enters what is by far the highest pinnacle of its existence, I find myself asking exactly what the role of a DJ is? More specifically though, how does recent technological advancement effect the industry? Obviously there will be drastic changes and choices for both the aspiring and accomplished DJ to make. But these decisions will be up to each and every one of them.

While some have embraced the growth of technology within both hardware and software, others have become resistant to such change. Perhaps we could call them ‘Luddites’ of the dance music industry? Or perhaps the art of DJing is evolving into a form completely separated from that of what we used to know.

Others however, have been much more pragmatic, choosing what works best for them individually, whether this be during live performances or working in the studio. Whether you are a DJ or not, what are your views? Should we whole-heartedly embrace our ever-changing technological advancement within this art? Is there a limit to what we should accept and reject? I would love to hear responses from you guys before I post my own response. I look forward to hearing your views.

Game Axis Guitar Hero 2 Chamionship!

Game Axis offered a battle of epic proportions at our very own HOME as a console and single participants came together in a head to head to find out who came on top for the Guitar Hero 2 Championships. It resulted in a show down in three parts with 6 participants. As they went head to head they would leave only one to be the final champion showing his or her skill and agility to be unmatched. In the end it was Riyunoa who won.

After the winner was unquestionably decided for the Guitar Hero 2 face off, the event went into a more creative element whereby participants showcased their own interpretation of the sounds originated from video games.

The first participant, a HOME resident, gave insight into the influence computer game have on the sounds of drum and bass. Relentless in his approach, seamlessly mixing track to track, he brought together pieces to highlight sounds within the genre.

Next up was The Karl Maka, a group consisting of three elements, Ableton Live, a keyboard and an MC who bore a Darth Vader Mask. They definitely looked the part and continued with the sounds of super Mario hooked up to their keyboard, full of coin sounds and 1-ups. A slow rock synth ballad would be my description; they definitely took the cake for the most involved participants in more than just the musical sense.

Next up were Dracula, Guitar, Keyboards and a healthy attitude for horror video games. These guys dressed in a shiney red jacket with an overly sized collar and sequins. Their set involved high-speed guitar solos with fewer samples than the band that had previously performed. It was clear that Castlevania had influenced these guys. This was reaffirmed by the vocal sample at the end of their set.

Next Rueben Kee played along a keyboard to the sounds that he provided on a CD. He played with such flare and ferocity it was hard to tell exactly what was coming out from the cd and what was coming out from the keyboard.

Last but absolutely not least IKUMA who decided to plug in his old school gameboy created a technoish 4/4 sounding song with shakey hi hats, gameboy synth stabs and long notes only able to be produced but such a relic of our universal historic childhood. Truly a standout for his originality this was one act that took the crowd by storm.

At the end it was The Karl Maka with their track entitled ‘no more cheat codes’ with a much more social contextual aspect than the rest it applied to our daily lives and how nowadays there are no more cheats. IKUMAR came next with his out of the box instrument of the O.G. Gameboy we all grew up with. The last runner up and who could blame with the effort they put into their performance and costume was Dracula.

All in all I must say this was an unusual and insightful event for HOME club those who were involved and participated had a great time and spectators definitely learnt more than something just about simply music and video games, but the synthesis of the two. Hat’s off to Game Axis!

Last Friday saw two new comers make their appearances on the Home Stage. First up was Allura, a strong vocalist with some proper rock behind her. This band made a lasting first impression with high energy guitars and and an intensity equally matched by vocals and percussion. Catchy Zeppelinesque styled songs, its rare you see an indie band with roots coming back from bands who were much more heavy on guitar licks and solo, pin-holing the psychedelic rock of the 60s. I was very much impressed by a band I had heard less than a whimper from before their show. I'll be sure to check out what they will be up to. Yes yes, they have a Myspace people.

Next was Another Sunday Afternoon. Clearly coming from a much grungier pool than the first band, one might look towards bands like Weezer as obvious influences. A strong front man, lyrics were interwoven with dirty guitar riffs to tell stories that were both amusing and captivating. Towards the end lead singer and guitarist put his mouth to something other than the words to his songs but tothe strings of his guitar. In true Jimi fashion we had our very own rerun of Woodstock '69. Well not exactly quite the same but hey...

Phryman, Syco and Kiat took to the cans in the last Home Parties +65 to showcase some amazing pieces of art. Their pieces were works of independent art created freestyle outside the venue. Since this is a forum for discussion I thought I might open up the floor. Home has now been open for a couple of weeks and I'd like to ask the public what are their thoughts of the space and sound since the renovation? It is not completely finished and there are still things to be modified and implemented but how do you feel with the essence of its new clothes? I look forward to your responses.

In the meantime I will add my own personal opinions to start the ball rolling.

-Speakers are f£%*ing nuts, that bass is mind bending.

-Outdoor bar rocks, pity we have to close it at the later part of the evening.

-Walls are a bit bare at the moment. (Although I do know that is one of the areas being worked on right now.)

-They are constructed of high density cardboard.
-They are both light (easy to move around) and surprisingly soft!
(I know, I spent yesterday on them and Chris even manages to fall asleep on them at night!)
-They are flexible in their layout and arrangement.

I would just like to wish a very warm thank you to the individuals who have already donated items for Home's renovation. These items, a shadeless lamp (pictured), an extremely comfy sofa (just the way a sofa is supposed to be made) and a set of very swanky shot glasses will be a featured as part of Home's interiors. Your Home is now physically becoming ours and we hope to do the same by providing a space as comforting and assuring as where you lay your head to rest. Word up Kiat and Roll on Rolland! :)

Home Under Renovation

On the 26th of March, Home will close its doors to the public to go under a new phase in the club’s ongoing evolution. The renovation will take place until the 12th of April, after which there will be a soft launch held at Beat! on Friday the 13th. I urge readers to envisage a new space focusing on practicality combined with integrity, true to the Home of old but perhaps best described as, closer to form.

Never to be complacent with what Home has already achieved, we look forward to expanding into further achieving the club’s intentions and incorporating design features that will set the club another step further apart from the rest of Singapore’s nightclubs and venues. Supporting the local community in the arts is a firm design brief that will be the backbone behind the intentions of utilizing the space to the best of it’s ability. Once design is complete Home endeavors to incorporate an even wider range of events, from galleries, exhibitions to providing theatre space to hold performances.

Those now working on the project have termed Home’s independent style as ‘rojak’; a vernacular coining that outlines Home’s current designs and interiors, which permeate into its multidisciplinary range of events. Rather than come up with a new look that clash with a system which already works, the concept is simply an extension of the old, making the space more flexible and conducive to what Home’s intentions are as a club for it’s own and the greater community. Taking inspiration from local everyday aesthetics, architects have used ideas from an assortment of Singapore’s own structural design. Ranging from bar concepts taken from the features of the islands own Mama shops, column treatments in the lower levels of HDB flats and screen concepts from common washing line designs, these are only a few of a variety of influences, both vague and specific, absorbed from our local vistas.

There is one detail pertaining specifically to the interiors that appealed to me as an observer. This is the use of hybrid furniture. This will be simply as the term suggests, reusing old furniture, repainting and then combining parts or the entire piece into something new. Not only is it incredibly practical but it also cements the notion of the venue as a communal space made for those who come to feel more at Home, to be part of something that is physically theirs. For someone not part of the design process this became an insight into how exactly this concept was being put into practice.

Much time, thought and deliberation have gone into preconceiving the new space with a final desire to increase its visual personality and add functionality to the design. The prospected changes for Home will rejuvenate its unique spirit. The intention is to not only retain the Home that we have all come to love but to empower the individual as a part of its identity.

Bug Infested Home!

Deep thanks go out to both Kinemat and Motored who, without their help, this incredible event would not have been possible. Mad props to reliable organizers and those who made it feasible for this event to have both cause and meaning. We couldn't have done it without you.

A gathering of truly beautiful people came together at Home with an assortment of decorations that give an insight to the little bits of effort and affection that we continue to strive for as a venue. The club emanated a red warmth. Home was adorned with a number of different ornaments all with their own tag line and purpose.

loopinmotion started off the night with some deep, funky house getting people in the mood and on the floor. Next up were some proper old schoolers, both Nic Tan and Don played back to back a selection of all things jazzy and percussive. Soul seeped in as a techno attitude to beat matching and juggling, kept steppers stepping until the bugz made their arrival.

The Bugz started at quarter to one with some latin-esque flavoured tunes that increased population of the floor to a sweating hum-drum of dancing pulsating forms. From latin house, to broken beat, to garage and all things with uplifting funk and ridiculous bass, their sound draws on others but keeps character that is unique and absolutely dancalicious. All of the Bugz stayed in their attic going on rotation with the sweet chocolate females voices singing along live, adding that wondrous touch of soul and depth. Two of the guys emcee'd a distinctly London garage sound, always keeping everyone involved drawing the crowd in with their moves and smiles. This was positive vibes.

What an end to an era, a truly warm and beautiful last party of the Home you once knew. Things are to change but please do not fret, the spirit will always stay the same, Home will be returning to yours truly on the 12th, we invite you to celebrate with us on that day itself as we take another step into our continuing evolution.

Beat Live 23/3/2007 Reviewed

Beat Live last week saw two of my favourite acts that have previously performed here at Home Club. Bare with me on this one if it seems long winded but both Jamie Michael and Muon are two extremely talented acts whom I can't help but go on about.

Playing once again a selection of both covers and originals, Jamie Michael provided a heart warming opening set to an evening of diversity and great live music. His covers become instantly his, despite being smash hits for the likes of Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. He owns these songs sealing them with a flavour that is simply his. Both sweet and playful like mid albums of Elliot Smith, XO is the album that probably springs most to mind in comparison. Juxtaposing this with a raspy vocal at times and razor sharp wit he is a solo gem in a not so big handful of individual singer/songwriters who are utterly original yet completely accessible. If you didn't catch him you missed out, he enjoyed his gin and tonics and I certainly enjoyed his music.

And now for the headliners, MUON. Capitals it has to be this duo now turned trio never cease to astound who manages to catch them live. Forward thinking in terms of leaps and bounds as opposed to steps, this is a band I am confidant in saying should be globally recognized. Perhaps somewhat too obscure in ways for Singapore's small audience, they would strive in a scene with more tendencies to broken boundaries and the avant-garde.

Starting off with a classic entitled 'Against the Grain', I cement my belief that this group are prepared to take chances. They are organic yet meticulous, tight and powerful. Moody atmospheric soundscapes and deep melodies bordering on haunting and the sublime are only amplified by hypnotic electronic beats and static noises. The drummer's tightness only adds yet another level of 'oomph' to an already booming harmony of sound.

It wasn't up until 'Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep' that the new third member of the group made his debut. A brilliant addition of soft synth keys that both stabbed and hung in the atmosphere of sound. He added yet another element to the once colourful now rainbow audio palette created by this band. Full-on, progressive and uncompromising your perspective on Singapore's far reaching musical scene will only be broadened by an experience of Muon live.

Once again, Home provided a precursor to Beat, curated by both Home and Joe Ng, that continues to leave you lapping for more of our Singaporean talent. Uncut and without any saccharin influence, this was an experience in unadulterated live musical pleasure and ingenuity.

I'm sure there are those of you amateur bar tenders, or professionals for that matter that have hidden potent gems under your sleeves, so please come and share them with us and be part of something unique at Home. Who knows? Your drink could now be the new taste of our club. Let your imaginative taste buds wild, we're up for the zaniest mixtures of whatever you might think appeals to both your lips and liver!

Not only that but we are also in need of new interiors. For this reason we would like to ask our readers and our regulars: does anyone have some old furniture that they now want to get rid of? Anything will do the idea is to use an eclectic mix of pieces to create a personalized space. 2007 marks the dawn of a new era. Kiddies, put on your dancing shoes and get ready for a wave of the new as a new team of DJs are set to get you dancing from the get-go.

Rewind two years back and you might recall a team of DJs under the moniker ‘Poptart’ that had you skanking and even crowd-surfing to riotous tunes. While starting last year, legendary veterans took to the console to bring you, BEAT, a Madchesteresque vibe every Friday while looking good doing it. This year, my darlings, is time for a fresh bunch of twee advocates to bring you something not entirely fresh, but not exactly run-of-the-mill either.

The Commercial Underground Trio is far from preachy music elitists. Rather, they are start-stop DJs with good tastes, intent on wearing your dancing shoes thin. Spinning anything from Jurassic 5 to The Libertines, Beck to Deerhoof, Paul Twohill(of Singapore Idol fame), Holly G(a.k.a. Megahollytron a.k.a. Well, I'm not gonna reveal too much information but yes, HomeClub is going under renovation. We'll be closed from the 26th of this month until our official launch. Be prepared, we're intent on making you feel more at Home than ever. Utilizing the space in the best way possible we bring you the feel of HomeClub with both aesthetic and practical growth. It may look different, in fact, it will BE different but the heart of our space will always be the same.

For the first time ever two of Singapore's biggest dance floor heavy weights come together for an electro vs. techno bout of epic proportions.

Though it’s been decided that this special collaborative club-night between the Shameless electro team and the Sublime techno/house team is called Subliminally Shameless, we still believe you should have a say! (Should we call it Shamelessly Sublime?)

Another month and for most, this Saturday marks the beginning of another year. For this Chinese New Year celebrations we are doing a a sacrifical hanging of that oh so iconic but dilluted persona of the disc jockey.

Zaidi, a man with his hands in many different pies, in conjunction with with the infamous Jahrauc bring us another dose of DJ hanging. Both formerly of Poptart this duo has continued to give you the indie rock fix of mayhem and madness that quite frankly I have no idea what you (and you know who you are when I'm talking about you) would do without our monthly offerings of the DJ to the dancefloor gods. With a healthy disregard for all ethics as a DJ, this duo continue to churn out dancefloor friendly rock for you to stomp your feet to. Sometimes catchy, always punky and more often than not dirty in electrofied sense of the word, these guys dish out that what you need on a Saturday night.

This month sees special guest, Mister Black back in the frontline with the two poptart veterans. Monsieur Noir is one of the founding members of rising Internet radio station, Sweetmusic.fm. As an avid lover of everything alternative he digs that much deeper into his crate to bring you a refreshing insight into the foundation and future of the music behind the growing indie rock scene. February's Beat Live

As you should already know Home hosts a monthly event entitled Beat Live. Curated by Joe Ng, (who some may say is the godfather of true indie rock here in Singapore, for more information plese click here or visit his myspace for a more indepth look at Joe himself.) This event presents some of the best local bands to giving a live performance at your very own Home Club.

This Friday, up and coming rock and roll stars "The SuperIllegal's" will be performing along side local newcomers "The Eggheads". A bit of indie, a lot of rock and even some folk. Performances will be followed by Beat with regular DJs, Ginette Chittick, George Chua and Joe Ng.

For this Beat Live please welcome for the very first time two virgins to the Home Club stage. Do not be misinformed, virginity, in this case, does not (but also could) mean inexperience. While many may not have heard of The Eggheads they are rising stars with a distinct sound that puts them apart from the rest of your average rock band. A unique vocalist with tight instrumentation play a number of covers as well as individual compositions. Dont come late to this event because this is an opening band that is set to grow and go far. I promise you, if missed you will sincerely regret their debut performance at Beat Live this friday, so basically miss with the anticipation of your own dissapointment, I know I will be there bright and early.

Coming with more floor stage experience is The SuperIllegas who are headlining for this week's Beat Live event. After performing at venues such as Bar None a couple of months ago and the Mosh Festival more recently, this team is slowly but surely climbing up the ladder of Singapore indie rock stardom. Equipped with a rock stars approach to performance it is not unusual to see guitars sacrificed to the gods as lead guitarist Terrence takes no prisoners with an axe swing in between vicious chords. With more stage prescence than a mice on a single than a telescope focused directly on a mouse running round and round a personal treadmill, the lead singer will blow you away with her vocals and unforgettable frontwoman appeal. I urge you once again, this is another band you cannot miss, not only for their professionally executed sound but also their unmatched overall stage performance. Anyone who has seen them at their previous gig at HomeClub can let me know if they feel the same.

Healthy Rhythms this Thursday!

Be prepared for something special as we witness a new installment at HomeClub. Lead by the more than competant Nic Tan, (ex renovation and quantumlounge.net member), Healthy Rhythms will kick off this thursday with an injection of "an array of cosmic beats and soulful vibes that are in vogue to their ears, interpreting old sounds with a new guise."

Anyway who knows anything of the history of renovation can attest to their underground persistence in promoting music, art and design all into the parties that used to be, but are unfortunateloy no more. we give you something different but something at least with the same energy and ferbvour.

Get your dancing shoes on for something healthy, eclectic and funky. A breath of fresh air and fresh sounds as the team bring you an alternative to what you usually are accustomed to hearing on a dancefloor. Come down for something different, something with substances. Take in the nutrients, these beats are not only healthy but they've undenoably got something for the soul in all of us. Following on from their recently successful appearance at Saturday's Home parties last week, the Interpop DJs are ready to continue pushing the indie rock sound onto Singapore's underground dancefloors.

As the Home of the indie scene, this Valentines day, Home Salad is presenting something "new, different but nice"... The Interpop crew cosisting of Shaun, Daniel, Noelle and the DickBandit will be enticing all you midweek love buddies with their unique blend of alternative and indie tunes. This quintet has been growing in a very big way celebrating with us on this very special day. Catch them in action before they make it down to the upcoming Good vibrations festival over the Chinese New Year period.

Opening up for the four DJs will be recently rising cover band rockers 'The Sputniks'. Consisting of frontman Ben Heng (vocals/guitars), Jez (guitars/vocals), Cowan (bass/vocals) and Melvin (drums). in their own words this band "pride themselves on being great friends first and drunk musicians second." Rubbadubdub

Another installment of Rubbadubdub and while the crowd was not the greatest gathering we have seen, I see this night growing in maturity and flavour. Our crowd has also grown in terms of diversity, which for me is always a positive thing.

Our residents really have got the sound down to a niche, Rubbadub being the only thing available apart from Dubwise where there is a similar sound and vibe emanating from the soundsystem. I love these nights and its not only because I've been part of conceptualizing them, but because of what an alternative they provide for those who want something different on a Thursday.

I mean shit you can't beat some fat bass, skanking melodies and soulful vocals on the night before the weekend starts. If that isn't reason enough to make it down why don't you check out the promotions for the night. All in all its a grat night to come down to your Home (and mine) away from home. Some great sounds and some great times last night, thank you to the DJs and to all those who made it down.

Saturday Interpopped

The cherry of Interpop's Saturday event was officially popped last weekend. Starting off in true style, one of my current favourite local bands played a mammoth set of incredible, original soundscapes. Amateur takes control never fail to take complete control of the stage and their audience, propelling them into their universe of distorted guitars and an oblivion of sonic immersion. Complete with imprecise and perfectly appealing hypnotic melodies, these guys always provide an alternative form of musical experience, at least in comparison to the majority of the bands we are exposed to here in Singapore. (Of course, for me there are exceptions, Muon and I am David Sparkle immediately spring to mind.) Swaying as if possessed by the 10 minute plus songs that were so effortlessly composed, seemingly without chorus but never without structure, their music is nothing less than refreshingly reflective. Looping melodies built up over and over again with a pedal seems to be a trade mark Adel in the structuring of their songs and it works absolutely brilliantly. with the addition of a new guitarist with a list of pedals that light up like a christmas tree and also some keyboards, the band has reached a new level of fullness and togetherness. I aplaud this band for continually surprising me with their out of the box sound and use of guitar and effects. i look forward to future encounters with these gifted not so amateuristic amateurs.

Next up was Pinstripe Kelly, the first time I've managed to see these guys and I feel confidant in saying they had a real rock'n'roll feel to them. With an older alternative feel to them, these guys rocked out with an involved vocalist (no matter that he still had the lyrics written on a small sheet of paper), a drummer on an overdose of caffeine and some skillful guitarist, one who enjoyed jumping around like a pogo stick while the other carressed his guitar with love and affection. This band really played with the crowd and they thouroughly enjoyed the set. One of the highlights I think, for me and the audience anyway, was the rendition of the Radiohead track I can't remember the name of, apologies im not very good with words.

Last up to take the floor to their dancing selves was the interpop crew. Great track selection, they played off the response of the crowd to previous songs played in previous sets. TheDickBandit and Noelle first up, a slow start may have been the beginning but for not very long. They played a selection of Home Club classics, I suppose I could call most of the tracks this as they are now regularly being churned out by Beat! (who i must say also add in wonderful obscurities thus adding variety) as well as Hang The DJ. This is another one of our growing indie rock nights that really know how to rcok the floor. An obsession with the effects button, these guys added extra spices to their flavours of alternative and indie pop rock. Shaun and Daniel came to the floor later on in the night bringing track after track of dancefloor satisfaction. A great night once again for this growing genre of dancefloor madness. Hat's off to these Saturday virgins, we look forward to seeing you very soon. Keep it popping!

Elektone & I Am David Sparkle Play Home

Last night saw two forward thinking bands perform at Music for Good's 'Off Beat'. A show I have been anticipating for quite sometime now and I'm happy to say I was not to let down. First up was Elektone. A one man band just for this night we were eloquently shown a lesson in singer songwriting with one man, one laptop and one guitar. Beats, melodies, appropriate distortion and effects came out of nuendo as lead singer and guitarist played chords, composed drum beats, melodies and sung all through out (apart from the instrumental song that came earlier.) I give much credit to this one man show, who seamlessly pieced together his songs with both ease and precision. His songs still sounding organic no matter how much technological mechanics were added into the mix.
Next was new (or should i say now?) post rock giant 'I am David Sparkle'. Since the addition of the somewhat mysterious Nico Santino, I have discovered this band to be making rampaging headlines and tearing down all forms of popularity for the current trend of local bands in Singapore. An impeccable collection of experienced musicians have replaced the following of short, catchy sing along songs to add their very own electrifyingly mammoth sets of harmonic chaos and mayhem.
Simplisitc melodies, building into a crecendo of drones and pure white noise finally there is an alternative to the 'alternative' we are polluted with in the music scene here in Singapore. Check back in a couple of days on the website to see which live band will be playing next. By the way who is CUT? I'll just throw that one out for randomness.

All the way from Ipswich hails Steve Carr aka Digital. With a long family history in Jamaican reggae and dub, he has taken such sounds and infused them in uplifting feel good jungly drum and bass. A super down to earth guy, well grounded, his set was very much the same. Tight and infectious with many a trick up the sleeve, this was a man who not only brought great new music to our soundsystem but also showed us precision and conistency. But what the fuck happened to the turn out?!?!?! Seriously now, this guy commanded the sound, bringing every sitting body to the dancefloor. But there wasn't enough, this is a well renowned DJ stopping by on his way back after 22 days over the christmas and new year period when he was in New Zealand. Surely Singapore can do better than it did... I heard rumours this wasn't a good night because of an auspicious wedding date. Can someone please clarify this with me? I'm still kinda stunned there should have been alot more people there...

Mani @ HomeClub... Who will be next???

One of indie rocks most prolific players made it down to Home Club to show us exactly what he is all about. Mani, of Primal Scream and ex-bassist of the Stone Roses mashed together a barrage of melodies and beats from different genres. Not only was he bound by his loyalty to an early Manchester sound but also brought back old classics from the early dance movement such as 'House Nation' (by who I forget but im sure you've already got that “house, house, house, house nation” going on in the back of your head, or at least I do...) and ‘This is Acid’ by Maurice on an early Chicago label Trax records. HomeClub became a sweaty mass of indie rock pulsating and gyrating entities. What a character, a joker, definitely an individual in love with life and not consumed by hatred or cynicism. A refreshing personality to say the very least, full of stories, dialogue and jokes, one could not be helped but be drawn in by his comments, opinions and of course track selection. A slice of history, a living legacy right here on our doorstep… Who will be next? Please let me know who you think should be our next international here at HomeClub. Last week's BeatLive showcased two talents one of which we at Home have experienced before and another... Well, the other was a special treat.

First off Caracal played a momentus set of their catchy sing alongs with enough energy to tire even the duracell bunny out. These guys are young and they play hard. Hard, not in the sense of some gutteral form of industrial hardcore, but more in their involvement and enjoyment of their music. If you read their words on their 'myspace' page they are a band very much with the intent on getting the audience involved in their music. They did in fact do just that, with the rock star swinging of the bass guitar to big widening grins on all of their faces, they are a band that love what they do and are doing what they love. Hat off from my court to a young group of talented individuals who are giving this scene some fuel and enthusiasm.

Next up was the annonymous 'Nuance'... A band perhaps heard of by you but not by me, I had the fortune of showing you guys all an interesting photo of them in the studio. More folky than anything else, but I am with a reluctance to pigeon hole any musician or band into a corner pocket, these guys were something different. Great melodies and song writing, one song even sounded like their own interpretation of Chinese Opera... Immense. Keep your eyes out for both of these bands, we should be holding them again soon. In the meantime? Well in the meantime, come down for Music for Good's Off Beat on the 26th of this month for two very special guests... Who you might ask, I'll let that simmer for a little while but let me just say it will be epic indeed.

This Friday ladies and gents we have two very special bands playing. One of which I have had the personal experience of watching play many times live now at Home. They are Caracal.
We have seen them from before Battle of the Bands to the finals, through to putting on an acoustic set, which for a band as young as they are they managed to do remarkably well. As a band that is still growing, they have tightness and that poppy adolescent emo style which is ever so popular with the crowd. But this is no result of mere choice of music direction or youthful enthusiasm, these guys are good. They have a strong selection of original songs, which we all know most of you already know the words to, so lets see it all again with lighters and wailing sing alongs this friday at my Home and yours... Here is an old photo of them playing a while back at our acoustic, now no more acoustika gig.

Next up is Nuance and all I can really tell you about them is that in their own obscurely ambivalent description of themselves, “We are a bit of everything. Sometimes, we don’t even understand what we sound like. 10 months in a year, our vocalist and rhythm guitarist were not even around." Here's a picture that I think makes them look like extremely enthusaistic air guitarists. Friday will prove me wrong, they've got quite a history as being one of the biggest Singaporean bands so make it down and see what they are all about, until then I leave you with, Nuance...

James Chan aka PODO is an integral part in the evolution of techno and electronic music. Previously based in Hong Kong, he managed heavy weight label, Technorient. Consisting of various sub-labels, Technorient has produced works by Technasia, John Thomas, Renato Cohen, Steve Rachmad and Joris Voorn to name only a select few. James has not only assisted in the production and distribution of electronic music but is also an active and involved DJ and producer. As part of Hong Kong's Robot Underground crew he has played both DJ sets and live performances with a string of residencies and performances at both clubs and festivals. Most notable perhaps, are his appearances at the Rockit festival and his residency at the perhaps small in size, but larger than life in spirit, club by the name of Yumla. He has frequented trips abroad taking his unique live sets to the greater global community within China's growing dance scene. This includes Paul Van Dyke's China tour in 2005 to mention merely one of the many.

Never limiting himself through narrow direction or limited job description, he has been a vital cog in the works of varying different machines. Whether this is a music consultant to the trading and development council of Hong Kong, producing the theme sound for Instyle magazine China or helping start as an advisor to True Colour Club (also based in China), James has never restricted himself in any of his undertakings. Now as managing director of Love Da Music, he will be the first of his kind to bring forward thinking musical concepts to Singapore's shores.

02122006, HomeClub dressed up in red in tribute to the fight against Aids in Africa. Legendary Doc Scott graced Singaporean shores with a blistering set of all things soulful with a heavy low end to compliment. A true professional, it was clear that Mr. Scott was here for business. Intricate compositions, blindingly deep as well as crowd pleasing made for an energetic and responsive dance floor. An assortment of detroit-esque strings and bass lines that would make any dub fan gleefully pleased were churned out with both passion and precision. This was clear affirmation of the skills of someone who had been doing this for years, no glitches or slips, no throw away tracks or instances of less than 100 percent enthusiasm. This man's mission had started long ago, this was merely the continuum of an already existing legacy. Stay tuned for photos.

"Shameless, after a short absence returns with an eclectic line-up of arcane selects that includes XU (TAC,MISSHAPES), DJMENTOR, G:TEK & Z.ITCh.

The greatest thing that Home Club has going for it is its ambience. An intimate, cosy setting, as it's name suggest, makes perfect a place for palsy-walsy get-togethers.

Having been clueless about the whole Electroclash scene, I decided to check it out and trust me, I wasn't at all disappointed.

Resounding to upbeat electro+new wave party vibe, the undeniable funk beats emanating from the speakers had me going onto the dancefloor straight, impudent of the drowsy state that I was in.

It was not entirely surprising to see an absence of a crowd considering the fact that this genre is still in it's premature stage, for Singapore that is.

Phil, 32, one of the few present, agreed.

"It's still a new scene. However, it's been a good progress so far and I won't be at all surprise if it gets as big as it had been in Germany."

However, it's a blessing in disguise.

Truly, I didn't had to worry about stepping on someone else's shoes or bum into some bloke's eye candy.

The mix for the night recombined elements of discopunk and new wave with extravagant amounts of electro drum n' bass. Your body pulsate under the stomping sounds and feet rhythmically pound the floor and even if there were any glitches, you would care less.

It was a pretty smooth night except for the occasional high-pitched tone that went a little over the top but professionally complimented with catchy electronic grooves that seem to overwhelm the several clubbers waltzing in delirium. Of course, with infectious sounds by the abovesaid Djs, even Pope Benedict would trade his Mass for a day of electroclash party.

Enough said, if you missed "Shameless: The Regular Stomp", you've missed having a taste of what the clubbing scene is gonna sound like, couple of years down the road.

Who needs a crowd when you've got the music and the dancefloor to yourself?"

Guerrilla Recall 25/11/2006

Another Rilla Guerrilla Assault on HomeClub Saturday night. Cherry warmed up the crowd beautifully, first getting the early birds onto the dancefloor. things were quiet compared to the last Guerilla but this would change as the night became closer to morning. Escobar, an old schooler, one before my time but absolute quality in track selection and mixing technique. This guy was all over the place with style and precision, chopping in and out, playing with percussive patterns, you could see he was having a great time, this emanated and the dancefloor soon was moving to his flow. next was Invid another old schooler, who brought this soulfully astral track, then bringing it back with some heavy beats, which saw the return of steppers and swayers alike. Next were true veterans and pushers of Singapore's drum and bass scene, big up, both Kiat and Vortex went back to back for a mammoth set of both soulful and pumelling tunes with depth. Acely crafted, well delivered and recieved. I have to give a big shout out to MC Kane, he really involved the crowd, getting people on the floor, giving respect to both dj and dancer. To finish off JK, a guest from innernation gave his signature style of double drops. This might have been on a scale smaller than the last Guerilla but once again professionals really showed how a proper event should be executed. Stay tuned for the next one, we only hope these events keep on coming. Bring them back, Guerrillas on the A-list attack.

One only needs to look at the definitions from various dictionaries and encyclopedias to understand a little bit more about what Sublime is about. It's purpose, intentions and achievements.

On Saturday a collection of the most prominant of Singapore's underground dance scene came together to create something especially... Please choose one of the adjectives in the defintion of sublime.

The night kicked off with Mr. Pink from sweetmusic.fm (my favourite singaporean online radio station [www.dublab.com is my favourite worldwide], although I also have been enjoying unpopular radio, still need to catch liveisevil, I recommend all of these to those who are reading)... Monsieur Rose (that's pink in french but I assume you already know that, I know I didn't) played an amazing selection of obscure old funk and soul (the type you love hearing but can never put the name to) along side Hairspray who went more into the electronic sphere. Ray started off slow, with the likes of classic Warp tunes from veteran signing, Autechre. He started off slow but ended with a collection of pummeling classic techno tracks. From Mills to didgeridoo and polygon window (Aphex), closing off in a beautiful premonition of the harder edged sound that was to come later on in the night.

Next up the two J's came to play a sound that I personally attribute much of todays innovations in todays dance music. Back when Knuckles, Levan and Ron Hardy were first discovering what they could create without the use of generic instruments, playing funk and soul tracks on reel to reels adding a backbone of kicks, snares and hi-hats through cheap drum machines that had been rejected by the established musical industry. However, it was not until the unique sound of the Roland TB-303 that a real Chicago house sound was born. Sorry I know I've gone on an extremely obtuse tangent but I'm pretty passionate about this machine, the sound and the DJs. Hawtin and Aphex are only part of a newer generation that have recycled this sound, its present everywhere, so I just have to thank Chicago. Thank you. Back to Justin and James, aka Twinhed and Clart. It was the perfect direction, perfect evolution from the two Djs before hand, taking it slightly down but keeping the floor warm, inviting all those who weren't yet on the dancefloor to timidly take part in something that would both grow, accelerate and explode. Kudos to these drum and bass DJs who went beyond there usual spectre of sound to provide something timeless and fresh.

Sue Shan and Feng were next on the roster of this diverse and talented team. Mixing it up by including a cdj on an extra channel while Sue Shan was at the wheels of steel, Feng layored sounds over the top of minimal and electro tracks. Both experienced Djs kept the crowd entertained. Feng scratched samples of vocals, kicks and snares over the top of Sue Shan's impeccable selection of tracks. Both funky and dirty, this was a set for the real freaks who were there for something a bit more sophisticated and different. This team really brought it to the table, we hope you enjoyed and appreciated it. I know I did.

Next was the 'flow'... Ramesh took over the console bringing things down with an amazingly astral yet funky melody, inviting those who had left to come back and enjoy his freeform and jazzy approach to both house and techno. Playing with Ramesh was Norman Chung, a fellow Singaporean with many years of experience under his belt, who has recently had his debut released on SinoHK. Check out Norman Chung at Juno.co.uk for samples. Both Djs played things different and unexpected, yet still accesible and extremely dance friendly. Things heated up as the floor filled in as feet, hearts and minds came out from the hidden cracks where freaks like to hide and not be found, but appear when they so choose.

loopinmotion kept things smoothly on the incline as he brought an array of percussive beats and soulful strings to a brink of uncontrollable pressure and ecstatic tension release. There was something in the air in this set and if you were on the floor, im sure you won't hesitate to agree with me. Don from Kinemat, an old friend of loops, had a special guest set with loop and lock, (who would come at the end of this tri-rotation). Don came after loop and you could tell there was some added flavour and perhaps even a bit of friendly competition that fueled greater performance, tighter mixing and out-of-the box ambition from both parties. But lets not forget DJR, the one on the side who was playing the cross fader like it was a musical instrument, chopping and dicing melodies above wax originated beats, truly something to be heard if you haven't already. lock'n'groove added some humour and funk as he started with some screeching 303s and ended with telling the crowd that they better get their 'footwork' on and their booty shaking. By now the loop had been firmly established and the groove was now in place. The party was now peaking.

Taking over with one of my favourite tracks of this year (Carl Craig's remix of Theo Parrish's 'falling up'... for those interested, Technasia has just released another set of remixes for this young yet already classic track), was Cherry and Tyrone Shoelaces. A perfect ending to the night, these minimal DJs brough a tired crowd to their absolute limit, with so many DJs, so many sounds and so much fuel for the floor it was only to be expected that the crowd and completely exhausted themselves by the end of the night.

Jamie Michaels followed by Hang the DJ

Jamie Michaels started off the night with some great renditions of songs you would never normally hear in an acoustic set. He also played his own original songs which were again unique and far removed from what we usually hear at Home. Songs that stick to my mind however was the titanic theme song (if I knew what the name was I would tell you, what I do know is that it's by Celine Dion, 'Rock with you' by Michael Jackson and the theme song to the bodyguard by Whitney Houston. This guy rocked the house although there wasn't much of a house to rock, the crowd inevitably started filling in as Hang the DJ finally came on.

Hang the DJ kicked off the night with a bang. Zaidi and Jahrauc showed us that three can be a crowd while a pair is perfect. They took control of the floor accomodating for the earlier crowd and then for the rush of all that have become what I have coined the indie mayhem massive. Inside and out were full of smiling faces as an ex-poptart crowd enjoyed music they had missed since the final one more than a month ago. Also though a new crowd came to appreciate what so many had done at previous events. Truly something unmissable, keep your calendars posted for the next one, things are only gonna get bigger and better... HANG THE F%$KING DJ, He'll only make you dance your socks off and cream your pants...
